Our Conference Speakers

It is with great pleasure that we confirm the following Triumvirate conferences:

  • Monday, 26 of May at noon
    During lunch time, a discussion will be organized at the Marriott Hotel with former delegates of the Triumvirate, who will give suggestions and advice to this year’s delegates.
  • Tuesday, 27 of May at noon
    Conference with Dr. Earl Fry, professor of political science at the University of Brigham Young and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Fry’s intervention is entitled "Is the Canada-Mexico-US Relationship at a Crossroads?" at the University of McGill.
  • Thursday, 29 of May at noon
    Lunch Conference with Dr. Ruby Dhalla, Liberal MP in the House of Commons. Dr. Dhalla is the youngest woman to have been elected member of parliament. She is notably member of the Canada-United States interparliamentary group.
  • Thursday, 29 of May, 4h30 pm
    Conference with M. Pierre Marc Johnson, former Premier of Quebec, a lawyer and co-author of The Environment and Nafta - Understanding and Implementing the New Continental Law.
  • Friday morning, 30 of May
    Lunch conference with Mr. Gilles Duceppe, MP and Leader of the Bloc Quebecois. Mr. Duceppe will present his party’s point of view with regards to NAFTA.
  • Friday, 30 of May at noon
    Lunch conference with Mr. Jack Layton, MP (Toronto Danforth) and Leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP). Mr. Layton will talk about A better future for working families: Rethinking the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Each conference will be followed by a question period with the delegates, whom we hope will actively participate. We invite you to regularly visit our web site at www.fina-nafi.org under the Schedule link, for updates on the simulation’s activities.

The documents to bring to Montreal

  • You should bring with you an identity card in addition to a passport, to present at City Hall, for security reasons.
  • Do not forget to bring with you some of the documents that NAFI has sent you during the recent weeks: the constitution, the Participant's Handbook and the Legislators' Guide (for those who assume this role).
  • On site, we will give you a copy of the Official Program of the week.

Transport and Hotel

The international airport Pierre Elliott Trudeau of Montreal is serviced by many taxis. The service is available from 6am in the morning until the last flight. The flat rate is $ 35 CAD for travel between the airport and downtown Montreal. All taxis serving the Montreal-Trudeau airport accept all major credit cards. Regarding hotel rooms, they will be available from May 25th at 3pm and until May 30th at 12. A map showing the area around the hotel is available at the end of the bulletin.

Guided Tour in Old Montreal

For those who would love to discover the historic city with its modern surroundings, a 2 hour guided tour will be organized on Sunday, May 25th at 3.30pm. Interested people must send your attendance confirmation by email, before May 20 to Mr. Guy Abou-Mourad (guy.abou-mrad @hotmail.com). The cost is of $10 CAD for a guided tour in English and of $ 15 CAD for a guided tour in Spanish. http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/

Second News Bulletin

It is with great pleasure that NAFI sends you this second news Bulletin of the 2008 edition of the Triumvirate. These bulletins will inform you of any developments regarding the event, deadlines and necessary preparations, on a regular basis.

Registration fee payment

If you have not sent your payment for registration yet, please do so as soon as possible. Checks should be drawn to the order of FINA and all checks from the same university should be mailed in a single envelope through a secure transmission (DHL, Purolator, Fedex etc). NAFI’S Postal address is:

Submitting articles, draft resolutions and position papers

If you have not yet sent your article, your first draft resolutions or your argumentative essay to FINA, please do so rapidly so that it can be put online in 'virtual commissions'. Details regarding these documents appear on the NAFI website in the Roles Guide (Working Documents section).

Web Forum

Participants are invited to visit the internet site of the virtual commissions section and register to take notice of proposals from other participants on the various draft resolutions and to be able to add comments as well. Transport, Hotel and food

What are the different ways to get to downtown Montreal from Montreal-Trudeau Airport? Here is some good information you should know: Taxi services serving Trudeau Airport are required to accept all major credit cards and the taxi ride should cost no more than 35 CAD.

A shuttle service to downtown is also available but perhaps less practical. The cost is 14 CAD per person for a one way ticket and 24 CAD for a round trip. Departure occurs every 30 minutes. Now, Shuttles go to metro station “Berri-UQAM” which is situated on the green line, the Marriott Hotel is located at the “Place d'Armes” (orange line) not far from the “Berri-UQAM” station. Hotel rooms will be available from May 25 at 3 o’clock in the afternoon and they should be released on May 30 at noon, unless you decide to extend your stay which will incur a cost of an extra night. Please advise Celine Roche (croche@fina-nafi.org) of food allergies you may have so we could take them into consideration regarding the choice of meals offered during the week.

First News Bulletin

March 14th 2008

It is with great pleasure that NAFI sends you the first news Bulletin of the 2007 edition of the Triumvirate. These bulletins will inform you of any developments regarding the event, deadlines and necessary preparations, on a regular basis.

Place and Time of Activities

As you know, the Triumvirate will have the privilege to be host this year in the Montreal City Hall from next May 25 to 30, where you will found some photos of the places on our websites. Concerning the accommodation, Marriott Springhill Suites Old Montréal will be the place of residence.

Participants’ Roles

The Secretariat of the Triumvirate has started assigning to each participant a role (legislators, journalists or lobbyists) accompany of the roles Guide at the same time, which present different responsibilities, that each one will have to assume during the event.

In parallel, you should familiarize yourself with the Constitution (March 9th, 2007 version) that is found on our web site (www.fina-nafi.org) under Triumvirate 2008 – Work document, likewise with the theme of your commission which a document is available in the same section.

The Legislator’s Guide will be available in a while.

Extension of the Registration Deadline

The deadline for registration for the 2008 Triumvirate has been extent to the 31 of March 2008. As a result, make sure you complete the registration form that is found under the link 2007 Triumvirate – Register.

Payment has to be made by February 15th 2007, by cheque payable to the order of NAFI. All cheques from the same university should be sent in a single envelope by courier (FedEx, Purolator, DHL, etc.). The address of NAFI appears at the bottom of this message.

Visa and Passport

Mexican participants must hold a valid passport in order to enter Canada. For further information, please consult the Canadian Embassy in Mexico web site: http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/mexico-city/menu-en.asp

Please take note that certain documents may be required, such as a return plane ticket, financial information (ex: bank account records) as well as an invitation letter attesting to your participation to the Triumvirate 2007. If you should need such a letter, please contact the Secretariat at info@fina-nafi.org

For American citizens, a valid passport is sufficient. For further details, you can consult the Canadian Government Offices in the U.S web site at: http://geo.international.gc.ca/can-am/washington/offices/default-en.asp?lang_update=1

Important: Ensure that your passport is valid for several months after your expected date of return.

Travel Insurance

Everyone who is coming from outside Canada must have an insurance travel.

Attire

Formal attire is mandatory during activities in the simulation schedule.

Submitting articles, draft resolutions and position papers

Please remember that the deadline for these documents is April 4th 2008, such indicated in the guide roles.
